Marine indicted for murder
Japanese prosecutors have indicted Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, twenty, on October twenty-fifth for allegedly murdering a thirty-nine-year-old Japanese woman on Okinawa.
The alleged crime
Ballard, stationed at Futenma Air Station, allegedly strangled Anna Yagi with a telephone cord at a hotel in Naha on October third and stole her backpack.
Ballard's changing account
Ballard denied the allegations at his arrest but has since made statements implying some involvement in the case, according to investigative sources cited by media.
Japan reviews military conduct
Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said officials are reviewing off-base conduct rules for U.S. troops, including patrols, curfew management, and the liberty policy governing private activities.
“We plan to hold discussions including whether the existing rules are effectively functioning.”
Pattern of crimes by U.S. personnel
Arrests related to U.S. service members and families exceeded one hundred last year. In two thousand seventeen, a former Marine was sentenced to life for rape and murder of a local woman.
Okinawa's disproportionate burden
Okinawa hosts seventy percent of America's military facilities and most of fifty-four thousand U.S. troops in Japan despite comprising just zero point six percent of Japan's landmass.
The big picture
