Fake 49ers player arrested for fraud
Daejon Love, 35, posed as a San Francisco wide receiver on social media and defrauded nearly three dozen women out of over a million dollars using fake investment schemes.
Victim warned 49ers in December
Gwen Herndon submitted a complaint to the 49ers website in December 2025, writing that a man was impersonating a player, stealing from women, and damaging the team's reputation.
“there is a federal investigation surrounding a man pretending to be a 49ers player”
Team responded but unclear if escalated
Guest services replied that the 49ers take impersonation seriously and encouraged Herndon to contact law enforcement. It's unclear if anyone beyond guest services reviewed the complaint.
“We take reports of individuals misrepresenting themselves as members of the San Francisco 49ers very seriously.”
How the scam actually worked
Love met victims on dating apps, posed as a wealthy investor, and worked with accomplice Taylor Jamie Chan, 18, to convince women to give money for fake investment opportunities.
“Love convinced many of the victims they were in sincere romantic relationships with Love”
Victim lost ten thousand dollars
Herndon gave Love ten thousand dollars for an investment in March 2025. When she asked questions, he blocked her and she later sued in small-claims court.
49ers say they were cooperative
The 49ers told ESPN they were unaware of Love's activity before the FBI contacted them. The FBI said the team has been completely cooperative in the investigation.
