GM rebuilds the screen inside its trucks

The 2027 Silverado and Sierra get GM's new infotainment system, built by a design team poached from Apple and Google.

In brief

The 2027 Silverado and Sierra get GM's new infotainment system, built by a design team poached from Apple and Google. GM stopped treating the in-car screen as a software problem and handed it to designers, starting with its best-selling pickups. Originally reported by CNBC.

New screen, new trucks

New screen, new trucks

GM is rolling out a fresh in-vehicle infotainment system later this year, debuting on the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups.

Designers took over

GM moved its digital experience group out of software and under design, led by Sebastian Bauer, who came from Apple and Google.

“This was all part of a very strategic, very intentional restructuring”

Fewer menus to dig through

The system surfaces the control you need at the moment you need it, like the garage door opener or an incoming call, instead of burying it screens deep.

“Our job is to make sure that we reduce cognitive load”

Super Cruise shows its work

The driver cluster now draws nearby cars and pedestrians, so you can see what the hands-free system sees. GM did not display surroundings before.

“you understand that the vehicle sees what is happening around it”

CarPlay stops hogging the screen

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now run in a window instead of swallowing the whole display, so GM's own features stay reachable alongside them.

“these should coexist and you should get the best of both worlds”

The industry's weakest link

J.D. Power's 2026 dependability study ranked infotainment and connectivity the least reliable part of the car across the whole US industry. GM plans to spread the system to more models.

The headline

GM stopped treating the in-car screen as a software problem and handed it to designers, starting with its best-selling pickups.
