McDonald's unveils growth plan
McDonald's announced its McDonald's greater than NEXT strategy at an investor presentation at its Chicago headquarters on Wednesday, detailing how it will implement plans first unveiled in June.
Stock falls on announcement
McDonald's shares fell six percent in afternoon trading after the presentation, as Wall Street reacted negatively to the company's plans and CEO Chris Kempczinski's comments about the business.
Why McDonald's needs growth

McDonald's U.S. business is trying to rebound from sluggish sales as consumers hit by years of elevated inflation visit restaurants less often. The company expects inflation and flat traffic to persist.
Restaurant redesign coming
McDonald's will mandate restaurant remodels roughly every decade for franchisees. The new design features updated PlayPlaces and more open kitchen layouts so customers can see McCafe drinks being prepared.
AI-powered restaurant system
McDonald's will introduce Restaurant greater than NEXT, featuring ArchIQ, an artificial intelligence-powered operating system. Archy can take orders in English and Spanish, saving about fifty labor hours per week.
Massive investment commitment
Through twenty thirty-six, McDonald's plans to spend as much as eight point five billion dollars to accelerate franchisees' investment in restaurant improvements. About five billion of that support will happen through twenty thirty.
Cost per restaurant
A standard lobby remodel of a drive-thru restaurant in the U.S. typically costs about four hundred thousand to four hundred fifty thousand dollars. Additional investments tied to the plan will cost roughly eight hundred thousand per restaurant.
Franchisee returns projected
McDonald's is projecting franchisee returns in the mid-to-high twenty percent range, while corporate returns will be in the high teens. The initiative will take about four years to return franchisees' investment.
“We'll get good returns. Now that doesn't mean to say that there aren't going to be a lot of anxieties, a lot of questions.”
Margin expansion targets
By twenty thirty, McDonald's is targeting an operating margin in the low-to-mid fifty percent range. In twenty twenty-five, the company reported operating margins of forty-six point one percent.
New media network planned
McDonald's plans to build a media network involving advertising other businesses on its digital drive-thru displays. Executives said it could grow to become a billion-dollar business, tested at four hundred fifty company-owned restaurants.
Chicken market expansion
McDonald's already sees nearly fifteen billion dollars in system sales from Chicken McNuggets, four billion from McChicken and two point five billion from McCrispy items. The chain accounts for about twenty percent of the one hundred thirty billion global chicken category.
Hand-breaded chicken coming
To grow its chicken share, McDonald's plans to introduce hand-breaded chicken options like competitors Chick-fil-A, Popeyes and Raising Cane's offer. U.S. restaurants will soon start piloting hand-breaded chicken menu items.
Beverage strategy shift
McDonald's wants a bigger share of the global two hundred thirty billion dollar beverage category. Today it holds roughly ten percent share and is the second-largest coffee player globally. It rolled out an expanded drink menu earlier this year.
“Beverages are no longer just an add-on, but a reason to visit.”
GLP-1 users still visit
McDonald's U.S. President Skye Anderson said eighty-four percent of households with at least one GLP-one user still visit McDonald's. The company is adding protein-forward options including bowls, grilled chicken and egg bites across breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Training program launches
McDonald's will implement Make It Golden, a multiyear training program for corporate employees, restaurant workers and franchisees to ensure consistency, improved food quality and better customer service. The program begins rolling out on October fifth.
“While there's so much our customers love, we are falling short when it comes to consistent execution.”
Here's the gist
McDonald's stock fell six percent after announcing plans to spend up to eight point five billion dollars through twenty thirty-six on restaurant upgrades and new technology to reverse sluggish U.S. sales.
