Trump announces energy ceasefire

President Donald Trump claimed Russia and Ukraine agreed to an energy ceasefire effective immediately, but provided no details about the alleged pact or whether either side confirmed it.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!”

Why now: global energy crisis

Trump's statement comes as energy costs soar globally during the U.S. war with Iran. An energy truce between Russia and Ukraine could help alleviate the oil and gas crunch ahead of winter.

Zelenskyy: waiting for Washington

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine supports the ceasefire but is awaiting details from the American side. He emphasized Ukraine's commitment to de-escalation and ending the war.

“We are awaiting details from the American side.”

Zelenskyy's earlier condition

Earlier, Zelenskyy said Ukraine would only stop attacking oil refineries if Russia halted its attacks on Kyiv's electric grid. He asked Trump to signal Russia not to attack Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

“If they want energy ceasefire, we are open for this. Don't attack us. Don't kill our children. We will stop attack[ing] your diesel.”

History of failed ceasefires

Ceasefires between Russia and Ukraine have been consistently difficult to hold since Russia invaded in two thousand twenty-two. Trump has repeatedly sought to end the conflict but has been unsuccessful so far.
