Trump says there's an energy truce. Kyiv says not yet

In brief
Trump announced a deal to stop energy strikes. An hour later Zelenskyy laid out the conditions Russia hasn't met. Zelenskyy will stop hitting Russian energy only if Russia reliably stops too, and he doesn't trust Moscow to hold to it past its own elections. Originally reported by CNBC.
Trump declares a deal

On Truth Social, Trump wrote that Ukraine had agreed not to hit Russian energy targets and that Russia had agreed to the same. The White House offered no further detail.
“Ukraine has agreed not to hit Russian Energy targets. Russia has agreed to do, likewise!”
Kyiv adds a condition
About an hour later Zelenskyy said on X that Ukraine would halt its strikes only if partners guarantee Russia stops hitting power, energy sites, infrastructure and food routes.
“Ukraine is not convinced that Russia is willing to abide by any agreement”
The trap he sees
Zelenskyy wants any pause to be durable, not a convenient lull that collapses once Russia finishes its elections and gets cheaper fuel through the vote.
“does not fall apart after the Russians hold their 'elections'”
Refineries fund the war
Ukraine calls Russian energy sites legitimate military targets and struck two oil refineries last week, arguing Moscow spends the oil money on killing Ukrainians.
“to finance the war and the killing of Ukrainians”
Diesel hits six dollars
US average diesel passed $6 a gallon for the first time on Friday. Trump blamed the Ukraine war rather than the Iran conflict for the global price spike.
“The World's Diesel price rise is mostly caused by the Russia/Ukraine War, not Iran.”
The Iran factor
The price surge tracks the Iran war, including a drone strike on Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, the route built to bypass a Strait of Hormuz still barely moving traffic.
The big picture
Zelenskyy will stop hitting Russian energy only if Russia reliably stops too, and he doesn't trust Moscow to hold to it past its own elections.
