Trump confronts CNN at the UN

President Donald Trump told CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins at the United Nations on Tuesday morning, "You should not be here covering me," as she asked about a poll showing two-thirds of Americans do not think the U.S. is winning its war with Iran.
“You should not be here covering me.”
Trump says CNN should not be there
Trump gestured at Collins and said, "I'm surprised that CNN is here covering me." When Collins noted the United Nations allowed them in, Trump replied, "You should not be here covering me. You said you weren't going to cover me."
“You said you weren't going to cover me.”
CNN denies Trump's claim
Collins later said on air, "We never said we were never going to cover the president." She added, "We will continue to cover the president despite their efforts to block CNN from the White House grounds."

Trump bans three outlets from White House
Trump announced Friday he was banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, citing what he called false stories about him and his administration. The ban took effect Saturday morning when Secret Service officers took press passes from journalists from those outlets.
Three outlets sue Trump in federal court
On Monday, CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a lawsuit against Trump in U.S. District Court in Washington, asking a judge to block the ban and restore their access. The suit alleges Trump violated the First Amendment and the Constitution's Due Process Clause.
Outlets defend their First Amendment rights
The three outlets said in a joint statement, "We are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes."

TV pool suspends coverage over CNN ban
A five-member consortium of TV news networks that rotates pool coverage of the White House said four networks would suspend pool coverage ahead of Trump's trip to New York because the White House was not allowing CNN to act as the pool as originally scheduled.
Judge Kelly schedules hearing for Wednesday
Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, ordered the Department of Justice to respond to the outlets' request for an injunction on Tuesday and scheduled a teleconference hearing for Wednesday. Trump said he expected Kelly to rule against him.
White House defends ban with talking points
MS NOW obtained talking points the White House sent to congressional Republicans. They argue no president has been more transparent with the press and that the First Amendment does not entitle outlets to a hard pass or briefing room seat at the White House.
“the First Amendment protects their right to publish; it does not entitle certain outlets and members of the press to a hard pass, briefing room seat, or place in the press pool.”
