White House TV pool halts Trump coverage over CNN ban
Four major networks stopped covering the president's UN trip after the White House barred CNN from its rotating pool.
In brief
Four major networks stopped covering the president's UN trip after the White House barred CNN from its rotating pool. When one news outlet is excluded from press access, the entire pool can choose to stop covering the president in solidarity. Originally reported by CNBC.
White House bans CNN from press pool
The White House barred CNN from serving as the designated TV pool member covering President Trump's trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly on Monday.
Four networks suspend all coverage
NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox News stopped covering Trump's pool events in response, with Fox News' bureau chief saying there would be no replacement pool put in place.
“Effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President.”
Pool members defend press access
The four networks issued a joint statement saying no administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting, and the public needs accurate information about government.
“The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government.”
CNN plans legal challenge
CNN, along with MSNBC and Politico, said they are filing a lawsuit against Trump to overturn the ban on those three media outlets from the White House.
How the pool system works
Members of TV and other media pools rotate traveling with the president and covering his White House events, then share video, photos, audio and quotes with all other media members.
The essence
When one news outlet is excluded from press access, the entire pool can choose to stop covering the president in solidarity.
