How Discovered Attacks Work in Chess

Learn how stepping one piece aside can unleash devastating double threats across the board.

In brief

Move one piece to unleash another

Move one piece to unleash another

A discovered attack happens when a piece steps out of the way to open a line for a queen, rook, or bishop behind it. The moving piece can create its own threat at the exact same time.

“In a discovered attack, the piece that moves is not the one doing the damage.”

Force responses with discovered check

When the opened line targets the enemy king, your opponent must deal with the check immediately. This gives your front piece total freedom to grab material or create chaos elsewhere.

“The opponent must answer the check, so the front piece can capture almost anything it likes.”

Double check leaves no escape

A double check occurs when both the moving piece and the newly opened piece attack the king simultaneously. Because no single move can block or capture both attackers, the king is forced to move.

“The king must move — nothing can block or capture both attackers.”

Line up your long-range pieces

Line up your long-range pieces

Build your attack early by placing rooks, bishops, or queens behind your own pieces along lines aimed at major targets. Look for front-piece moves that attack something else, forcing your opponent to solve two problems at once.

“Look for your own bishop or rook hiding behind another piece.”

Break the line to stay safe

Defend by stepping out of the line of fire or blocking it with a pawn before the attack launches. Never leave your king aligned with an enemy piece, even if another piece is currently standing between them.

“Capture or chase the front piece before the battery is loaded.”

The bottom line

Line up your long-range pieces behind your own units so stepping aside creates two threats at once.
