Half a game, three games, one season

The White Sox head to Cleveland with the AL Central lead shaved to a half-game and the whole year riding on three nights at Progressive Field.

In brief

The White Sox head to Cleveland with the AL Central lead shaved to a half-game and the whole year riding on three nights at Progressive Field. A young White Sox team that spent the season proving people wrong now has to protect a lead, and the tiebreaker sits one win away. Originally reported by Chicago Sun-Times.

Grichuk's ninth-inning swing

His go-ahead homer Saturday night in St. Louis guaranteed the Sox would land in Cleveland still on top of the AL Central, even after Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Cardinals.

The vibe changed

Grichuk put words to what everyone felt. Spring was about proving doubters wrong. September is about not letting go of a playoff spot.

“Now it's been more of [a], 'We're in a playoff spot. Let's not lose it,' type of vibe.”

Nobody says it out loud

Grichuk was careful to note the clubhouse doesn't talk that way. It just hangs there anyway.

“No one's saying that; it just kind of feels like it could be a little bit of that.”

Pressure is a real thing

Will Venable told the Sun-Times the weight on the environment is not imaginary. He felt it at its heaviest about four or five days ago.

“There's the idea of added stress and pressure on the environment, which is a real thing.”

He felt it lift mid-sweep

Somewhere in the last two home games against Pittsburgh, during a sweep, Venable sensed the tightness leave the room.

“One of the last two games at home against Pittsburgh, I felt it leave.”

Pranks as a diagnostic

Venable's evidence wasn't results. It was people goofing around again.

“There were just people pulling a bunch of pranks and having fun in the clubhouse.”

The Cuban Vikings superfan

Miguel Vargas wore a Justin Jefferson jersey and blasted the "Skol!" chant in the locker room Sunday morning, leaving the coaches to marvel at American culture.

Loose, but still stranded

The mood said normal. An afternoon of empty at-bats with the bases loaded said something else.

Venable has seen both endings

He coached the 2023 Rangers through a late lull to a title. He played for the 2010 Padres, who grabbed a summer lead and frittered it away.

The trap is trying harder

Venable's warning isn't tightness so much as everyone asking "What can I do?" to stop the slide. That's the eternal baseball trap of doing too much.

No scoreboard, no problem

Busch Stadium has no out-of-town scoreboard, so the Sox couldn't track the Guardians. They didn't mind.

Chasing the No. 2 seed

Grant Taylor framed it as a normal day. Winning the division matters because of what the seed buys in October, not for the banner.

“That's what we're more focused on instead of trying to win the division for the division's sake.”

One win locks the tiebreaker

The Sox are 6-4 against Cleveland, so a single victory clinches the season series. Whoever takes this set leaves with the division lead.

Nobody plans for wild card three

Sean Burke was blunt about the target. The division is the goal, and the backdoor route is a consolation.

“Nobody goes into the season saying, 'I want to make the third wild-card spot.'”

This is why you play

Colson Montgomery sees the showdown as the season condensed. Come out flat and it's over. Davis Martin, 29 and starting Tuesday, called it a chance to practice playoff stress.

“This is determining your season. Come out flat, season is going to be over.”

The takeaway

A young White Sox team that spent the season proving people wrong now has to protect a lead, and the tiebreaker sits one win away.
