The Navier-Stokes problem may be solved

A Millennium Prize question about how fluids move has apparently been settled, and the Clay Institute is not rushing to confirm it.

In brief

A Millennium Prize question about how fluids move has apparently been settled, and the Clay Institute is not rushing to confirm it. Someone appears to have cracked the Navier-Stokes Millennium Problem, but the prize process is deliberately slow, so the claim now faces years of scrutiny. Originally reported by Clay…

A million dollars, seven problems

A million dollars, seven problems

The Clay Mathematics Institute announced the Millennium Prize Problems in Paris in 2000, attaching a $1M prize to each of the hardest open questions in mathematics.

“The Universality of Mathematical Thought”

Why the prizes exist

CMI wanted the public to see that the mathematical frontier is open and close at hand, to reward the long grind on deep problems, and to honour work of historic size.

Not fancy crosswords

Each problem is a classical question that resisted решение for years. Solving one forces new structures and methods that reach far past the original problem.

“These are not arbitrary puzzles akin to fiendish crosswords.”

The fluids question

The Navier-Stokes problem asks whether solutions describing fluid motion exist and stay smooth in 3-dimensional Euclidean space, with no blow-up along the way.

Anticipation had been building

Nearby breakthroughs, some recognised by the Clay Research Award, plus new technologies speeding up mathematical research, made a resolution feel close.

Settled, apparently

On 11 September 2026 CMI said the problem appears to be resolved. Verification and credit follow set rules, the process is unhurried, and updates will come.

“we contemplate the announcement that the Navier-Stokes problem has apparently been settled”

What matters most

Someone appears to have cracked the Navier-Stokes Millennium Problem, but the prize process is deliberately slow, so the claim now faces years of scrutiny.
