The line that stuck

In February 2021 Shailene Woodley told Jimmy Fallon she never expected to marry a man who threw balls for a living. The man was Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“I never thought I'd be engaged with somebody who threw balls for a living.”

She liked the nerd, not the arm

Woodley was not starstruck by football. She saw a Jeopardy-loving nerd, which is how an actress known for her hippie streak ended up engaged to a Super Bowl MVP.

Summer 2020, the opening

A rep confirmed to Us Weekly that Rodgers and Danica Patrick had split. They met at the 2012 ESPYS and dated from 2018.

Spotted in Lake Tahoe

That same month, sports gossip blogger Terez Owens wrote that Woodley and Rodgers had been seen together in Lake Tahoe. The rumor mill started there.

He hinted at changes

On The Pat McAfee Show in September 2020, Rodgers did not confirm a relationship but talked about new habits and a better headspace.

“I have just a new and increased love of life and I have made decisions and changes and habits.”

The MVP speech tell

Accepting the 2020 AP MVP award, Rodgers listed his year: a strange season, no fans, and one line nobody missed. He never said her name.

“I got engaged and I played some of the best football in my career.”

She confirms it herself

Days later on Fallon, Woodley said yes, they were engaged, and had been for a while. Everyone else was catching up to old news.

“Yes, we are engaged, we are engaged. But for us, it's not new news.”

Kentucky Derby and Hawaii

May 2021 was the public couple era. They hit the Derby with Miles Teller and his wife Keleigh, then all four took a Hawaii trip full of Instagram moments.

Pandemic speedrun

In a Shape cover story, Woodley said lockdown forced them to move in immediately, which compressed the getting-to-know-you phase into weeks.

“We jumped in headfirst and got some of the sticky bits out of the way early.”

Why they stayed quiet

They announced the engagement months after it happened, and only to beat someone else to it. Then the reaction pushed them back into privacy.

“Let's just politely decline for a little while and live in our little bubble.”

Called off, February 2022

A rep told People the engagement was off and the relationship over. A source framed it as clean: different people, busy careers, no bad blood.

“It was an amicable split, it just wasn't working.”

Then they were seen again

Less than two weeks later they turned up together in Los Angeles. Sources said they were talking things through, not back together, and the love had not gone anywhere.

“Their love for each other never went away.”

Testing the waters

By March 2022 a source told E! News they were spending time together but never fully back on. The offseason gave Rodgers the room to try.

Done, on his terms

April 2022 closed it. A source said Woodley gave it another shot, saw that everything ran on his schedule, and walked.

“There was no reason to continue, and she's done with it again.”

What a broken heart changed

In a 2024 Bustle interview, Woodley said she used to keep giving after being disrespected. Now she wishes people well and leaves.

“Thank you so much for that information. Have a beautiful life. I wish you well.”

The traumatic early 2022

Speaking to Outside that December, Woodley described a really awful thing in early 2022 and a toxic situation she stayed in out of empathy for someone she never named.

“I felt like I lost my soul, my self, my happiness, my joy.”

His version, four years on

On the Not Just Football podcast in September 2026, Rodgers said that days after she accepted his proposal, Woodley told him she wanted to sleep with another man.

“I got to go fuck this guy.”

Her move, not mine

Rodgers said she returned the ring by March, that no real relationship existed in 2022 to end, and that the public story has him as the one who left.

“There's just a lot of narratives out there that are just not true.”
