What is the key takeaway from AA panic button becomes lifeline for abuse victims?
The Automobile Association's emergency service received 88 gender-based violence alerts in three months, often responding faster than police, exposing gaps in official response.

Eighty-eight alerts in three months

Between fourteen July and one October, the Automobile Association received eighty-eight panic alerts tagged as gender-based or sexual violence. That is more than one a day.

“Between 14 July and 1 October, the Automobile Association's (AA's) emergency response service received 88 panic alerts tagged as gender-based or sexual violence. That is more than one a day.”

The breakdown of violence alerts

Sixty-one alerts were tagged as domestic abuse, fourteen as gender-based violence, twelve as rape, four as sexual offences, and one as stalking. Some alerts carried more than one tag.

“Sixty-one were tagged as domestic abuse, 14 as gender-based violence, 12 as rape, four as sexual offences, and one as stalking.”

A woman says she is fine

A woman says she is fine

At one oh nine am on twenty-six September, a woman sent a panic alert but told the controller she was fine.

“The controller heard otherwise. She moved the conversation to WhatsApp, where the woman could type what she could not say out loud.”

Response officers arrive before police

In multiple cases, AA response officers reached women faster than police. One controller stayed on the line for more than three hours until police arrived for an elderly woman who had been sexually assaulted.

“Our controller logged the case with the SAPS and provincial services within minutes, then followed up for more than three hours until they arrived.”

Call for published response times

The AA proposes that the SAPS publish by province how long it takes to respond to gender-based violence callouts every quarter. If times are good, publishing costs nothing. If not, the country needs to know.

“The SAPS should publish, by province, how long it takes to respond to gender-based violence callouts every quarter.”

Mobility means freedom to leave

For a woman in danger, freedom starts with being able to leave and knowing help is on the way. The AA's emergency service provides that lifeline when official response is delayed.

“For a woman in danger, that freedom starts with being able to leave, and knowing help is on the way.”
