Fire sweeps through Mayfair home

A Mayfair house fire displaced 20 people, highlighting the dangers of illegal wiring, overloaded connections and overcrowded housing.

A fire gutted a home in Mayfair, Johannesburg, on Friday night, October second, displacing twenty people. The blaze broke out in a makeshift extension room occupied by a tenant before rapidly sweeping through the rest of the residence.

Resident describes the panic

Shady Fourie was in her room when the fire started. She said: I could smell smoke. I started panicking. Next minute all the lights are out. As I came out, I saw red flames all over and people were falling all over.

Overloaded circuit caused the blaze

Emergency Management Services found the fire was caused by an overloaded circuit. The fire ignited in a sub-tenant's room where an unattended two-plate stove and heater sparked, setting fire to nearby curtains before rapidly engulfing the dwelling.

Six major fires in two years

Six major fires in two years

Ward fifty-eight Councillor Ricky Nair, who has lived in Mayfair for more than four decades, notes that the area has seen six major blazes over the past two to three years. Both a May twenty twenty-five crèche fire that killed four toddlers and a later blaze that killed a mother and child were caused by overloaded electrical connections.

Illegal connections fuel the fires

Property specialist Mohammed Khan highlighted the widespread issue of illegal connections in low-income inner-ring suburbs. He said: Every home on this street is connected illegally. You just slip a guy some money and he'll connect you to the streetlights.

Overcrowding creates fire traps

Mayfair sits on the cusp of Johannesburg's CBD and attracts low-income job seekers seeking affordable accommodation close to work. More than fifty percent of residential homes have been altered with subdivisions and extensions. The Fourie home, meant for five or six people, was altered to accommodate twenty.

Partitioned rooms are fire traps

Property specialist Khan noted that partitioned rooms are constructed from flammable materials like thin hardboard and timber framing, usually improperly sealed. Residents cook in confined spaces using high-risk appliances such as paraffin lamps, gas burners and two-plate stoves, creating a dangerous environment where a single spark could lead to catastrophe.

Water infrastructure also fails

Firefighters have battled failing water infrastructure when handling fires. CPF chairperson Raheed Hoosien remarked: We were lucky last night that we did not get hit by water shedding, so we had the fire engines that could access water and put the fire out.

Councillor calls for regulation

Ward fifty-eight Councillor Ricky Nair maintains that strict regulation is the most actionable path to preventing future disasters. He stated: We have no choice but to turn the city around. We've got to push back. The solution lies in the enforcement of bylaws to regulate property subletting.
