Nobel Prize and sanctions on same day

South African jurist Navi Pillay

South African jurist Navi Pillay won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on October ninth. Hours later, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court.

Pillay's role at the ICC

Pillay served as a judge on the ICC's Appeals Chamber from two thousand three to two thousand eight. The Nobel committee cited her work championing international law.

Why Trump targets the court

The Trump administration has long opposed the ICC, founded in two thousand two to prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity. Washington objects to arrest warrants for Israeli officials.

Rubio's warning to the court

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US will ban transactions with the ICC, cutting off resources and crippling its ability to operate. Either the court ends its threats or the US will.

“Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC.”

ICC deputy prosecutor responds

Nazhat Shameem Khan, the ICC's deputy prosecutor, condemned the sanctions. She said they are intended to undermine the rule of law and that the court's work will continue.

“The sanctions are intended to undermine the rule of law internationally and the work that an independent judicial institution is doing.”

US allows some exemptions

The Trump administration issued four general licences allowing some transactions for ICC telecommunications, software, pension payments and transactions linked to ICC detainees.

Court prepared for sanctions

ICC officials have spent months preparing, shifting office computers from Microsoft software to open-source equivalents and making new arrangements for banking and health insurance.

US pressures allies to act

Rubio said the US expects its allies, many of whom are ICC members and rely on American defence, to rein in the court. The US will adjust sanctions if negotiations fail.

“We expect our allies, many of whom are part of the ICC and that rely on American service members for their defence, to rein in the court.”

Here's the gist

The US imposed sanctions on the ICC on October ninth, hours after South African jurist Navi Pillay won the Nobel Peace Prize, escalating Washington's long-standing hostility to the court.
