The Republican trying to impeach Pete Hegseth

In brief

Thomas Massie lost his seat to a Trump-backed challenger. Now he is forcing the House to vote on impeaching the war secretary who campaigned against him. A Republican moves first

US Representative Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, introduces a resolution to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in connection with the US conflict wit

Kentucky's Thomas Massie took the House floor Tuesday afternoon and introduced a resolution to impeach Secretary of War Pete Hegseth over the conflict with Iran.

The charge is high crimes

Massie accused Hegseth of carrying out military action in Iran when Congress never formally declared a conflict there, and said that amounts to an impeachable offense.

“high crimes and misdemeanors”

The procedural trick

He filed it as a privileged resolution. That skips the committee process entirely and forces the full House to vote, whether or not Republican leadership wants one.

He has done this before

Massie used the same maneuver last year to force a vote on releasing the Epstein files, brushing off pressure from GOP leadership to kill his transparency campaign.

The Pentagon hits back

Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson said standards and merit are back at the department, the arsenal is stronger than ever, and morale and recruitment are at all-time highs.

“Secretary Hegseth has been a transformative leader for the Department of War.”

Better by every metric

Wilson said Hegseth has cut bureaucracy and delivered for warfighters at every step, and that the entire department is unified behind his vision.

“By every measurable metric, the Department of War is better under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth's leadership than before.”

This fight is personal

Massie was ousted in a bitter primary this year by a Trump-backed opponent. Hegseth flew to Kentucky to campaign against him, an extraordinary step for a sitting Pentagon chief.

The last minute trip

In May, Hegseth made an unusual eleventh-hour visit to Massie's district to endorse Ed Gallrein, a challenger who largely kept his campaign away from media scrutiny.

Framed as a loyalty test

Standing next to Gallrein, Hegseth told Kentucky voters the president needed backup and that warfighters are the ones who give it.

“President Trump needs reinforcements, and that's what war fighters do.”

Obstruction, not leadership

He said Massie's instinct is to throw elbows at fellow Republicans and debate process rather than strengthen the movement Trump leads.

“At some point, constant obstruction is not leadership. It's just commentary.”

Speaking as a private citizen

Hegseth insisted he was campaigning as a private citizen, not as a Cabinet member. There is no known precedent for a sitting defense secretary stumping in a congressional race.

Three scandals stacked up

The former Fox News host is a top target of House Democrats over his handling of the Iran war, his central role in SignalGate, and repeated strikes in the Caribbean.

Khanna wants him gone

California Democrat Ro Khanna said Hegseth fired generals capriciously and ordered the killing of fishermen in the Caribbean, and told the Mail he should be impeached.

“Hegseth got us into an illegal and costly war in Iran which we are losing.”

November changes the math

Every impeachment starts in the House, and Democrats are forecast to win it this fall. That hands them subpoenas and the power to put Trump officials under oath.

A replay of the first term

Democrats are planning another wave of resistance, much like Pelosi's two impeachments of Trump. Not everyone on the left agrees impeachment is the right route.

Crow keeps his options open

Jason Crow, who sits on the House panels overseeing the CIA and Pentagon, said Democrats will use every tool available, but would not say if he wants impeachment.

“Pete Hegseth has got to go”

Incompetent and unfit

Some have accused Army veteran Hegseth (pictured with wife Jennifer) of being

Lawmakers accuse the Army veteran of politicizing the Pentagon, firing experienced generals, and recklessly sharing classified information that puts service members at risk.

Tokuda's blistering verdict

Hawaii Democrat Jill Tokuda, another Armed Services member, said his picture should be stripped from the Pentagon wall and he should face charges at home and abroad.

“Pete Hegseth is an unqualified, narcissistic, wannabe Chief of War”

Trump yelled at him too

Trump reportedly screamed at Hegseth about a military munition shortage problem that he thought was resolved during the Camp David Cabinet meeting shown above i

The pressure is not only coming from the left. Trump reportedly screamed at Hegseth at a late July Camp David Cabinet meeting over a munitions shortage he thought was fixed.

The polling has collapsed

Quinnipiac has Hegseth at 32 percent approval against 57 percent disapproval. His net rating sank to minus 25 from minus 9 when the Iran conflict started.

Here's the gist

Massie's privileged resolution forces a House vote right now, but the real danger to Hegseth arrives if Democrats win the chamber in November and gain subpoena power.
