Boil it first

Duncanville told people on private wells near a sewage spill on Little Creek Drive to boil or distill their water before drinking, cooking, bathing or brushing their teeth. The notice went out Thursday, September 10.

Half a mile out

The warning covers private wells within half a mile of the spill site, plus wells in any other area that might be affected. City water customers were not the subject of the notice.

Debris clogged the main

Construction debris from utility work upstream got into a sewer main and caused the overflow on Wednesday, September 9, according to the city.

Where it went

Wastewater reached a backyard and a drainage easement behind the 600 and 700 blocks of Little Creek Drive. Public Works crews were cleaning, remediating and disinfecting the area as the notice went out.

What the city left out

No fish kills or major environmental harm had been reported. The city also did not name the contractor, estimate the spill volume, or say when the boiling precaution ends.

Test before you stop

Use distilled water or a rolling boil for at least one minute, then have the well tested and disinfected if needed before ending the precaution. Questions go to Public Works Utilities at 972-780-4900.

In short

If you draw from a private well within half a mile of Little Creek Drive, boil or distill the water for one minute before drinking, cooking, bathing or brushing your teeth, and get the well tested before you stop.
