Six officers face discipline

Dallas police investigated how six officers handled a fatal 2025 crash involving former union president Jaime Castro. A sergeant got eight days suspension, two officers got shorter suspensions, and two others received written reprimands.

Pedestrian killed on Northwest Highway

On March 15, 2025, 25-year-old Atianna Washington was struck and killed while crossing Northwest Highway. Jaime Castro, then a senior corporal and police union president, was listed as a passenger in the vehicle.

Castro pleads guilty to false statement

Castro pleaded guilty in March to making a false statement to police, claiming his girlfriend was driving and had not consumed alcohol. Police have not publicly stated who was actually driving when Washington was struck.

Castro retires after investigation

Castro was placed on administrative leave in November after Washington's family attorney raised questions about the case. He announced his retirement in January, ending a career that began in 1998, and stepped down from leading the police union.

Family sues over investigation

Washington's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Castro and his girlfriend Angela Valles, alleging law enforcement did not conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the crash.

Accountability versus due process

A police oversight board member said officers who commit crimes or cover them up need accountability. The police union countered that discipline must be fair and based on individual actions, not just involvement in high-profile cases.

“Accountability is a huge thing now, whether it's locally here in Dallas or nationally, and people who commit crimes need to be held accountable.”
