Trump: AI's Only Guardrail Is a Smart President

Trump dismissed calls to slow AI down, naming Anthropic's CEO directly and framing caution as a gift to China.

In brief

Trump dismissed calls to slow AI down, naming Anthropic's CEO directly and framing caution as a gift to China. The White House is betting that existing legal authority plus presidential judgment is enough oversight for AI, just as the people building it say otherwise. Originally reported by Dallas Express.

No new rules needed

No new rules needed

Trump posted on Truth Social that artificial intelligence requires no extra government guardrails, pushing back on executives and researchers asking to slow development of powerful systems.

“The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT”

The power already exists

He argued Washington can already regulate and prosecute AI companies under current authority. Opposition to AI and to data centers, he said, is a 'SICK conspiracy' that would hand China an advantage.

Amodei in the crosshairs

Trump singled out Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, which builds Claude. Over the weekend Amodei argued labs should slow how fast they improve models so safeguards can keep up.

Rivals agreed with him

Amodei's proposal drew backing from OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI's Elon Musk, an unusual alignment among companies that otherwise compete hard for the same lead.

A resignation and a warning

Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon quit and said people building advanced AI believe it could pose an existential threat. Reports of AI used in sophisticated cyber operations added to the pressure.

Microsoft writes a constitution

Microsoft published a draft code of conduct requiring its AI systems to stay open to human correction and shutdown. AI chief Mustafa Suleyman called it a constitution for future models.

Vance wants it careful

JD Vance said the administration takes AI risk seriously but will move cautiously, and questioned why big AI companies are asking to be regulated at all.

China sets the pace

Trump keeps framing AI as a race with Beijing. Reuters reports the two countries will discuss AI safety this month, and China has built its own rules for autonomous systems and human oversight.

Markets took the hit

AI stocks fell Monday after Amodei, Altman and Musk called for a slower pace. Nvidia and other chipmakers dropped, dragging the broader tech sector down with them.

The short version

The White House is betting that existing legal authority plus presidential judgment is enough oversight for AI, just as the people building it say otherwise.
