Trump announces Greenland security deal

President Trump announced Friday that the U.S. reached a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland giving America permanent control over security matters on the strategically important Arctic island.
U.S. gets permanent military access
The agreement grants the United States permanent access, basing rights, and overflight privileges in Greenland. The U.S. can establish additional military installations without needing approval from Denmark or Greenland.
“We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland”
Blocks rivals from Arctic foothold
The deal prevents China, Russia, and other non-NATO countries from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments in Greenland without U.S. written approval. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it a guarantee of Arctic security at zero cost to taxpayers.
“permanently guarantees U.S. security interests in the Arctic at zero cost to the U.S. taxpayer”
Denmark keeps sovereignty intact
The agreement falls short of Trump's earlier calls to acquire Greenland outright. Denmark retains sovereignty over the self-governing territory, and Greenland's government emphasized its right to self-determination.
No expiration date on agreement
Trump called the arrangement an 'Infinite Life' agreement with no expiration date. However, Denmark and Greenland must formally sign it next week and secure parliamentary approval before it takes effect.
Months of Arctic security talks
The announcement follows months of negotiations over U.S. security interests in Greenland. Danish and Greenlandic officials previously said they would discuss increased Arctic cooperation while maintaining sovereignty and self-determination.
