What Texas actually required about Israel in schools

A viral post oversimplified three separate State Board of Education votes into one misleading headline.

In brief

A viral post oversimplified three separate State Board of Education votes into one misleading headline. Texas added specific language about 1948 Israel to high school standards, required Anne Frank's diary in middle school, and included ancient Israel in elementary curricula, but did not create a standalone Israel…

Viral post compressed three votes into one

A September 18 post on X claimed Texas required schools to study Israel's history, teach the 1948 founding, and assign Anne Frank's diary. The votes were real, but the headline flattened separate decisions made months apart.

September vote added 1948 Israel language

On September 4, the Republican-controlled State Board of Education voted 8-4 to rewrite high school social studies standards. An amendment requires students to identify 1948 as when the modern State of Israel was established in the ancestral homeland of the Jews.

Not a standalone Israel course

Not a standalone Israel course

The requirement locks in the year, homeland phrasing, and President Harry Truman's recognition of Israel. Teachers still write lessons and districts pick materials. It's one identification within larger world history standards.

Anne Frank diary came from June vote

The diary was not part of the September 4 vote. On June 26, the board approved the nation's first statewide K-12 required literature list, which includes Anne Frank's original diary for seventh graders.

Original diary, not graphic adaptation

The state list specifies the original edition of Anne Frank's diary. In 2023, a Texas school fired a teacher for assigning a graphic adaptation that included illustrated passages about Frank's sexuality.

Ancient Israel starts in elementary

The June K-8 rewrite added a unit on Ancient Israel in lower grades. Students learn about ancient Judea, the Jordan River, Jerusalem, the Exodus, and how Hebrew teachings influenced American law.

Three-part thread across grade levels

Ancient Israel in elementary school, Holocaust reading in middle school, and the 1948 founding in high school create a chronological progression. The changes reflect a deliberate structure, not a sudden focus on Israel.

New standards don't take effect until 2030

The June reading list and K-8 standards start in 2030-31. The high school courses approved September 4 begin in 2033-34. Current standards still govern Texas classrooms.

Democrats objected, board proceeded anyway

In June, 46 Democratic lawmakers asked the board to pause the votes. The board adopted both the June package and finished the high school courses in September. The Israel language survived the objections.

What to remember

Texas added specific language about 1948 Israel to high school standards, required Anne Frank's diary in middle school, and included ancient Israel in elementary curricula, but did not create a standalone Israel course.
