Compacts are half of Japan's Top 10

Japan's August 2026 sales chart shows old point-and-shoots holding their own against brand-new mirrorless bodies.

In brief

Japan's August 2026 sales chart shows old point-and-shoots holding their own against brand-new mirrorless bodies. Compact cameras aren't a nostalgia blip in Japan, they're outselling plenty of current mirrorless gear, even models that launched years ago. Originally reported by Digital Camera World.

Japan's chart is the tell

Japan's chart is the tell

Retailer Map Camera published its August 2026 popularity ranking, and four of the ten best sellers are compacts sitting right alongside the newest mirrorless bodies.

“Japan's camera market is an important one to watch for photography industry trends.”

Sony A7 V still on top

The A7 V holds No.1 and has run strong since its December 2025 launch, with big gains in autofocus, burst speed and video over the previous generation.

“The Sony A7 V delivers a big leap in autofocus intelligence, burst speed, video, and workflow flexibility over the prior generation”

Ricoh GR IV right behind

The cult street compact takes No.2 and now comes in three flavours: standard, HDF and Monochrome. A GR IVx variant is in development.

X100VI sells despite shortages

Fujifilm still cannot build the X100VI fast enough, and it lands at No.3 anyway. Demand is outrunning supply rather than fading.

Canon's old guard hangs on

The PowerShot SX740 HS and G7X Mark III have been on sale for years, yet both crack the Top 10. Buyers want simple point-and-shoot, not more features.

“compacts that have been around for years but are still proving popular with buyers”

A gimbal camera crashes in

DJI's Osmo Pocket 4P takes No.7, proof that pocketable video rigs now compete for the same shelf space as traditional cameras.

“DJI has created a near-perfect pocket gimbal camera, with striking dynamic range and creative capability”

In short

Compact cameras aren't a nostalgia blip in Japan, they're outselling plenty of current mirrorless gear, even models that launched years ago.
