Lumix S9 still waiting for its killer feature
Over a year after launch, Panasonic's compact camera lacks the autofocus mode that would transform its performance.
In brief
Over a year after launch, Panasonic's compact camera lacks the autofocus mode that would transform its performance. Camera makers should prioritize feature parity across their lineup, especially when a standout capability exists elsewhere in the range. Originally reported by Digital Camera World.
Panasonic drops firmware updates

New updates arrived for Lumix S9, S1II, S1RII, and S1IIE cameras. But one key feature is still missing from the S9 after 16 months.
The missing Urban Sports AF

The S9 lacks the Urban Sports AF algorithm released in May 2025 for other models. This autofocus mode excels at tracking fast-moving subjects like skateboarders.
“if I were Panasonic and I had a killer AF mode that nobody else had, I'd be putting it in every camera I made.”
S9 gains video codec options
Version 2.1 adds 4K 60p and FHD 120p recording in MP4 Lite format, a codec beloved by content creators. Lumix Flow app support also arrives.
Expanded button customization
The S9 now supports more assignable functions for lens buttons, including aspect ratio, stabilization, zoom, and focus controls.
S1 series fixes flash latency

The S1II, S1RII, and S1IIE now improve shutter responsiveness and burst performance when using external flash units, addressing issues pros faced during client work.
Lumix Lab gets LUT improvements
Version 3.1.1 adds LUT category filtering and downloadable LUT packs, making it easier to find and organize color grading presets.
What to remember
Camera makers should prioritize feature parity across their lineup, especially when a standout capability exists elsewhere in the range.
