In brief
A wildlife photographer tests Sony's lighter, more affordable 400mm and 600mm lenses and discovers surprising detail in every shot. Sony's new 400mm f/4.5 and 600mm f/5.6 GM OSS lenses deliver professional image quality at a fraction of the weight and cost of luxury telephoto primes. Originally reported by Digital…
Luxury telephotos get lighter

Sony released two new compact telephoto primes: the 400mm f/4.5 and 600mm f/5.6 GM OSS. They weigh just under a kilogram each, about three times lighter than Sony's brighter 400mm f/2.8 and 600mm f/4 models.
Hiking with extreme reach
The new lenses feel more like carrying two 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses than extreme telephoto primes. The weight trade-off is worth it for wildlife photographers who want to hike rather than sit in a blind.
Spotting a juvenile night heron

The photographer started with the 400mm but swapped to the 600mm when spotting an unidentified bird. Cropping the 600mm shots revealed it was a juvenile black-crowned night heron with entirely different feather patterns from adults.
Sharp detail on Sony A7 V

Using the 600mm on the Sony A7 V, a 33-megapixel full-frame body, the lens delivered impressive sharpness and detail. The f/5.6 aperture required slightly higher ISO but kept the lens hike-friendly.
A hidden spider web revealed

The biggest surprise came after reviewing photos at home. A distant egret shot also captured a perfectly preserved spider web on the same branch, with impressive detail even when cropped from the 33-megapixel frame.
The 400mm wins more keepers
Despite craving more reach, the photographer ended up marking more photos from the 400mm f/4.5. Its brighter aperture and lighter weight made it more versatile for varied wildlife situations.
Freezing water droplets
The 400mm f/4.5 aperture allowed the photographer to freeze water droplets at 1/5,000 shutter speed and ISO 400 while photographing an egret fishing near the parking lot.
Goldilocks lenses for wildlife

The new Sony 400mm and 600mm fill a gap in the E-Mount telephoto family. They balance price, weight, and image quality between luxury 600mm f/4 and budget 100-400mm f/5.6-8 options.
Affordable reach for everyone
These lenses make professional wildlife photography accessible to photographers who can't afford luxury primes or carry their weight. The semi-affordable price point opens wildlife photography to more people.
Detail beyond expectation
The real takeaway from the hike was discovering details in photos that weren't visible in the field. The lenses' sharpness revealed juvenile birds, spider webs, and water droplets that justified their design compromises.
At a glance
Sony's new 400mm f/4.5 and 600mm f/5.6 GM OSS lenses deliver professional image quality at a fraction of the weight and cost of luxury telephoto primes.
