Sony QSSR Upscaling Tech for PS5
Sony's QSSR AI upscaling boosts PS5 games without Pro's performance cost.
In brief
Sony's QSSR AI upscaling boosts PS5 games without Pro's performance cost. Sony's QSSR provides machine learning upscaling for standard PS5, improving image quality while maintaining performance for most games. Originally reported by Digitalfoundry.
Sony reveals QSSR
Sony has revealed QSSR - Quick Spectral Super Resolution - bringing machine learning based upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5.
Initial game support
QSSR is available initially for Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
Hands-on testing
We had the chance to go hands-on with the technology for around six hours a couple of weeks back.
Image quality improvements
Temporal stability is substantially improved, detail level increases, sub-pixel integrity is considerably superior.
Ghost of Yōtei results
Ghost of Yōtei saw less dramatic improvements despite already decent image quality.
QSSR vs PSSR performance
PS5 Pro has 300 TOPS of dedicated hardware for upscaling, while QSSR runs at 1.5ms to 1.8ms frame-time.
Daniel Craig's insights
Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer for Graphics R&D at SIE says QSSR enables developers to make better-looking games.
QSSR implementation details
QSSR leverages packed math instructions and FP16 math to maximize efficiency on standard PS5 hardware.
QSSR frame-rate impact
QSSR causes 8-10fps difference in 1440p upscaling but less impact in 60Hz performance mode.
Ghost of Yōtei comparison
Ghost of Yōtei's performance mode uncapped with VRR sees QSSR running almost identically to its stock FSR 3 implementation.
The short version
Sony's QSSR provides machine learning upscaling for standard PS5, improving image quality while maintaining performance for most games.
