Steal My Food Itinerary: 3 Days in Sifnos, Greece

A food writer's guide to eating your way through Greece's most celebrated culinary island, from ferry snacks to zero-waste fine dining.

In brief

A food writer's guide to eating your way through Greece's most celebrated culinary island, from ferry snacks to zero-waste fine dining. Sifnos rewards travelers who prioritize local tavernas and family-run spots over tourist infrastructure, with each meal connected to the island's farmers, fishermen, and…

Why Sifnos stands out

While friends scattered across Greek islands, Sifnos offers a particularly delicious reputation as a food destination without the international crowds. Each Aegean island has its own distinct cuisine shaped by local growing conditions and cooking traditions.

The best time to visit

August brings peak crowds but also peak-season produce. Now that summer has ended, temperatures are more forgiving, crowds have thinned, and fresh ingredients still fill restaurant dishes across the island.

Getting to Sifnos

Getting to Sifnos

Start in Athens and take a 2.5-hour ferry from the port of Piraeus. The journey offers incredible views of the Aegean islands and that famous shade of blue that makes the whole trip worthwhile.

Day 1: Ferry snacks at Yorgos

Two bifteki in pita make for the perfect lunch on the way to the ferry.

Before boarding at Piraeus, grab bifteki-style souvlaki in pita from Yorgos Souvlaki, one of the last places serving it the old-school way: grilled beef patties with tomato, onions, and parsley, no tzatziki. Order two per person.

Stay in Kastro village

The ancient capital offers limited lodging but lets you park and explore on foot. This special corner of the island rewards wandering through its narrow streets and clifftop views.

Day 1 dinner: Loggia Wine Bar

Lulu from The Knack Project tasted like dried herbs, dripping wet cherries, pomegranate, and watermelon rind.

Settle into the island at this clifftop taverna with amphitheater-style seating carved into rock. Try charcoal-roasted potatoes with tarama aioli or panzanella made with crumbled Sifnian anise cookies, paired with rare local wines.

Day 2 breakfast: Diporto Shop

The hearty breakfast bowl at Diporto Shop includes tons of seeds and fresh fruit over Greek yogurt.

This beloved cafe feels like a family member's kitchen. Order a freddo cappuccino and a yogurt bowl crowned with sunflower seeds, dates, apricots, and banana to fuel a hike down to the Church of the Seven Martyrs.

Day 2 lunch: Ammoudia

Diners are invited to take their pick from the fresh catch case at Ammoudia.

This beachside taverna in Cheronissos has wooden tables planted in the sand. Order revithada, a soul-soothing Sifnian specialty of stewed chickpeas, or point to fresh catch in the case and have it grilled over charcoal with lemon and olive oil.

Day 2 dinner: Cantina

Thinly-sliced local beef carpaccio with garum-mayo, and pickled mustard seeds from the zero-waste restaurant Cantina.

Chef Giorgos Samoilis runs this zero-waste restaurant by the sea with menus deeply connected to local farmers and fishermen. Expect poached monk fish in fig leaf sauce, charcoal-grilled okra, and Mizithra ice cream with local honey.

Giorgos's permaculture farm

A caper berry growing on Chef Giorgos Samoilis’ permaculture farm, whose harvest helps fuel his restaurants.

Chef Samoilis grows ingredients on his own permaculture farm, including caper berries and other produce that fuel his restaurants. This direct connection to the land shapes every dish he creates.

Day 3 breakfast: Theodorou Pastry

Head to this family-owned shop in Artemonas for kourabiedes, delicate almond cookies dusted in confectioner's sugar, still made by hand as they have been for three generations.

Day 3 lunch: Pelicanos

A special at Pelicanos: local amberjack, served crudo-style in glugs of local olive oil with fresh herbs and aromatics.

Chef Giorgos's second restaurant has a beach bar vibe and is known for crab and bottarga cacio e pepe with thick noodles. The fresh aguachile special is always worth ordering, and the views are unbeatable.

Day 3 dinner: Omega3

Amberjack crudo with a punchy green sauce from Omega3.

This seafood-focused restaurant in Platis Gialos specializes in raw and cured preparations. Sea urchin in pickled tomato water and ceviche with local sea bream, shrimp, or amberjack with cilantro pesto are standouts.

Places to visit next time

Say Cheers! offers sunset views from a van at a clifftop hotel. Tsikali on the west coast is famous for chickpeas. Kavos Sunrise is a Cuban rum bar with wall scrawlings reminiscent of San Juan.

The one thing

Sifnos rewards travelers who prioritize local tavernas and family-run spots over tourist infrastructure, with each meal connected to the island's farmers, fishermen, and generations-old traditions.
