Amazon launches Alexa Tablet series

Amazon announced the Alexa Tablet series today, replacing the popular Fire tablet family and placing the company's AI assistant front and center as a brand.

First hardware branded with Alexa name

Panos Panay, Amazon's Senior Vice President of Devices and Alexa, confirmed the Alexa Tablet series is the first hardware product by Amazon with Alexa as its brand.

More Alexa devices coming

When asked if this marked the beginning of more Alexa-branded hardware, Panay said it was just when it makes sense, then added coyly, not that you've seen.

Neo design language revealed

Panay revealed that Ralf Groene, who leads design for Amazon Devices and Services, is developing what he calls a Neo design language for the Alexa interface.

Neo connects fragmented AI ecosystem

Panay described Neo as a structure for moving information to customers in ways they can retrieve it depending on where they are, addressing the problem of fragmented AI agents.

“structure of how we're moving information. Not seeing it, but moving it to the customer in ways that they can get back to it, depending on where they are”

Problem of scattered answers

Panay explained that users face challenges remembering where they solved problems across different apps and AI interfaces, making it tricky to locate previous answers.

Cross-device ecosystem in development

Amazon is preparing a cross-device ecosystem with Alexa at its core, building on existing features like Fire TV resuming shows and Alexa tablets continuing Echo Show conversations.

Competition from Apple and Google

Apple is reportedly hosting an event in October to unveil a new smart home ecosystem with Siri AI, while Google has been inserting Gemini AI into speakers, TVs, thermostats and cameras.

Panay indicated he would return later this month to share more about Echo products and the Neo design language as Amazon positions itself against formidable competition.
