Android Auto leaves the car
Android Auto, designed to project onto car dashboards, can run on tablets and phones elsewhere using third-party receiver apps. This repurposes old devices as simplified displays.
What you need for a wired setup
You need an Android phone running Android eleven or newer, a spare Android tablet or phone, and a data-capable USB cable. Android Auto is already built into compatible phones.
Two apps to choose from

Open Headunit costs three dollars ninety-nine on Google Play and works with Android five point zero or newer. Headunit Reloaded costs four dollars ninety-nine and offers similar functionality.
How to connect via USB
Install Open Headunit on the tablet, connect it to your phone with a USB cable, select Android Auto in your phone's USB options, then open the app and grant permission.
Why use it at home
Android Auto's driving-friendly design filters distractions with big controls. You can pause Spotify or skip podcasts without unlocking your phone, and messages read aloud via voice.
Limited app selection keeps focus

Android Auto only works with a limited selection of apps, so you won't get distracted by Instagram or other time-wasting apps when you just wanted to check a song title.
The trade-offs and quirks
Google's official setup instructions don't cover using Android Auto on a tablet at home. The dashboard can be dominated by maps when you aren't on the move, and it's a fun novelty but expect some quirks.
“It's a fun novelty, but expect some quirks.”
The big picture
Android Auto, designed for car dashboards, can run on tablets and phones outside vehicles using third-party receiver apps, repurposing aging devices as simplified displays.
