In brief
Apple offers two versions of CarPlay: the standard version in 800+ cars, and the ambitious Ultra that controls your entire dashboard. CarPlay Ultra integrates with all your car's screens and controls, but it's only available in luxury Aston Martins right now. Originally reported by Engadget.
CarPlay brings iOS to your dashboard
Connect your iPhone via USB or wireless, and your car's screen shows a simplified iOS layout with navigation, music, and messaging apps. It's been available since 2014.
Standard CarPlay has real limits
You can only use apps on the main screen, and you'll need to exit CarPlay to adjust climate control or driving modes. This means extra steps while driving.
CarPlay Ultra controls everything
Introduced in 2022, Ultra spreads across all your car's screens and controls the speedometer, fuel gauge, air conditioning, and radio. You can customize everything like a racing game.
“It really feels like you're using a car system designed entirely by Apple.”
Ultra is barely available yet
Only luxury Aston Martins in the US and Canada have CarPlay Ultra right now. Porsche teased support but never delivered, suggesting manufacturers worry about handing control to Apple.
You need a newer iPhone
CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or later and only works wirelessly. Standard CarPlay works with older iPhones via USB or wireless connection.
The takeaway
CarPlay Ultra integrates with all your car's screens and controls, but it's only available in luxury Aston Martins right now.
