The problem with the button
Tapping the audio button launches a voice recording session, during which your iPhone stops playing music so it can record the message.
Apple's iOS 27 solution
iOS 27 now lets you choose between keeping the waveform record icon, switching to a microphone icon for dictation, or hiding the button entirely.
How to change the button
Go to Settings, then Apps, then Messages, then Show in Text Field. Select Record Audio, Start Dictation, or None. Force quit iMessages if the change doesn't appear.
You don't lose any features
Voice recording and dictation remain accessible through other methods. Tap the plus button for audio, or use the microphone icon below the keyboard.
Other iOS 27 iMessage improvements
Apple added a Drawing app for sketches and handwritten notes, an AI tool suggesting words and automating tasks, improved RCS support, and the ability to use one number across two iPhones.
