Canon gives the R8 II a retro reset
Canon’s new EOS R8 II brings classic SLR styling, faster shooting, better autofocus and in-body stabilization to its entry full-frame line.
In brief
Canon’s new EOS R8 II brings classic SLR styling, faster shooting, better autofocus and in-body stabilization to its entry full-frame line. The EOS R8 II is a much stronger hybrid camera than the R8, but its $1,899 price shows entry-level full-frame now costs more. Originally reported by Engadget.
Retro look returns

Canon’s EOS R8 II swaps the plain R8 shape for sharper styling inspired by the EOS 650 SLR film camera, giving its entry full-frame line a more distinctive look.
“borrowing design cues from its classic EOS 650 SLR film camera”
Sharper body, better control
The new body is more squared off, especially with the optional grip. Canon also adds a joystick for moving the autofocus point, a control missing from the R8.
Faster, steadier shooting
The R8 II shoots 40 fps with electronic shutter, continuous autofocus and auto-exposure. It also gains 5-axis in-body stabilization rated up to 7.5 stops.

Autofocus gets smarter
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II now covers the full frame and tracks people, animals and vehicles. The camera can even register specific people for tracking.
Video mostly holds steady
Video specs remain strong: oversampled 4K 60p from the full 6K sensor width, uncropped 1080p at 180 fps, and 10-bit 4:2:2 with Canon Log3.
Entry level gets pricey
The EOS R8 II is available for pre-order at $1,899, with shipping due in late October. A kit with the RF24-50mm lens costs $2,099.
“You may find that price a bit shocking”
