Chat with AI in your car via CarPlay
Apple's latest update lets you use ChatGPT, Claude, and other chatbots hands-free while driving.
In brief
Apple's latest update lets you use ChatGPT, Claude, and other chatbots hands-free while driving. Major AI chatbots now work in CarPlay through voice commands only, but they have real limitations like poor microphone quality and no navigation access. Originally reported by Engadget.
ChatGPT and friends now in CarPlay
Apple's iOS 26.4 update added an API letting developers bring AI chatbots into CarPlay. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Meta AI, and Grok are already available.
Voice-only for safety
All CarPlay chatbots work exclusively through voice commands to keep drivers focused. You can resume conversations from other devices, but you'll need iOS 26.4 or later.
“AI tools compatible with CarPlay only work through voice commands.”
How to set up ChatGPT in CarPlay

Update your iPhone to iOS 26.4, refresh the App Store, and tap Update All. Then tap the ChatGPT icon on your CarPlay home screen and select New Voice Chat to start talking.
Siri AI joins the lineup
If you update to iOS 27 on an iPhone 15 Pro or later, Siri AI becomes available in CarPlay and can actually control your car and access Apple Maps for navigation.
Customize your CarPlay dashboard
New apps appear at the end of your CarPlay home screen by default. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay to rearrange them and remove ones you don't use.
Microphone quality matters

CarPlay chatbots depend on your car's microphone quality. Poor mics or road noise can make them misunderstand you. Close windows or test the app while parked to troubleshoot.
Real limitations to know

CarPlay chatbots can't navigate, control other apps, or work without internet. You must open their apps manually since they don't respond to wake words like Siri does.
“These chatbots shouldn't be used for navigation, since they don't have access to your real-time location or a mapping service.”
