GameCube vs PS2: power isn't everything

Nintendo's little purple box out-specced the PS2 on almost every chip, and still lost the generation by 138 million units.

In brief

Nintendo's little purple box out-specced the PS2 on almost every chip, and still lost the generation by 138 million units. The GameCube won the hardware fight on paper, but the PS2 won the market with a cheap DVD player, a grown-up image, and 4,500 games. Originally reported by Engadget.

The sixth-gen argument never ended

The sixth-gen argument never ended

The PS2 landed in North America in October 2000, the GameCube in November 2001. Fans have been arguing about which one had more muscle ever since.

Sony's split-brain CPU

The PS2's Emotion Engine ran at 295 MHz and farmed work out to two Vector Units, one for geometry, one for lighting. Early on, most studios found that split more trouble than it was worth.

RenderWare rescued the PS2

Programming for the Emotion Engine got easier once Criterion started licensing RenderWare, middleware built largely to solve the PS2's awkward architecture.

Gekko and Flipper hit harder

The GameCube's Gekko CPU ran at 485 MHz, and its Flipper GPU laid down eight polygon effect layers in a single pass while the PS2 needed multiple passes.

Better memory, better textures

Flipper handled S3 texture compression on the chip instead of in software, and the GameCube carried 40MB of low-latency MoSys RAM against the PS2's 32MB of Rambus.

“The area that GameCube is similar to PS2 but just plain kills it is in textures and hardware lights. There is simply no comparison.”

The mini disc problem

GameCube discs held 1.5GB. Full-size DVDs held at least 4.7GB, so third-party ports had to be cut down or skipped entirely.

160 million to 21.7 million

The PS2 sold 160 million units before Sony retired it in 2013, still the record. The GameCube managed 21.7 million before the Wii replaced it in 2007.

Sony sold to everyone

Adult-skewed ads, mature games, a sleek living room shape, cheap DVD playback, backward compatibility, and nearly 4,500 titles. The GameCube read as a kids' toy next to that.

The short version

The GameCube won the hardware fight on paper, but the PS2 won the market with a cheap DVD player, a grown-up image, and 4,500 games.
