How far can video doorbells actually see?
Motion detection ranges vary widely across brands, and distance alone does not guarantee your doorbell will alert you to visitors.
In brief
Motion detection ranges vary widely across brands, and distance alone does not guarantee your doorbell will alert you to visitors. Video doorbell motion detection ranges vary by brand from five to thirty feet, but actual performance depends on sensor type, camera angle, sensitivity settings and environmental factors…
Ring's standard range
Ring says its video doorbells detect motion at about thirty feet, or nine metres. Larger objects like cars can trigger alerts from farther away than people.
“the standard maximum motion detection range for its devices is about 30 feet (9 meters)”
Ranges vary by brand
Eufy's doorbell detects horizontal motion up to fifteen feet and vertical motion up to five feet. Arlo's second-generation model reaches thirteen feet. Essential models reach sixteen feet. TELUS works best within eight feet.
Distance is not everything

Motion detection depends on sensor type, camera angle, sensitivity settings and software. Passive infrared sensors detect side-to-side movement better than motion toward the camera. Pixel Difference Analysis compares video frames to spot changes.
Customise detection zones
Ring lets you adjust motion sensitivity and set up to three customizable motion zones per device. This helps avoid false alerts from trees, sunlight, reflections and shadows on busy roads.
“moving trees, sunlight, reflections and shadows can lead to unwanted alerts”
Battery and subscription limits
Battery-powered doorbells like Google's Nest consume more power in high-traffic areas. Ring recommends mounting doorbells forty-eight inches off the ground. Subscriptions unlock video recording and smart alerts but do not increase detection range.
The takeaway
Video doorbell motion detection ranges vary by brand from five to thirty feet, but actual performance depends on sensor type, camera angle, sensitivity settings and environmental factors.
