The original Steam Deck is aging
Rumors of a Steam Deck two continue to circulate. The original Steam Deck LCD offered something fresh in twenty twenty-two: a PC gaming handheld that could run everything from old favorites to many newer AAA releases.
Battery wear is the biggest threat
Battery wear is one of the most likely reasons your Deck will eventually need some TLC. Although self-repair is possible, iFixit rates the procedure as difficult thanks to the battery being firmly glued in place.
Battery replacement costs jumped sharply

A July twenty twenty-six scare had many Steam Deck LCD owners worrying their handheld was on its way out.The price of replacement batteries jumped from eighty dollars to one hundred thirty dollars when stock returned.
Other repairs are more manageable
Thumbstick problems are relatively easy to fix. iFixit sells replacements for forty dollars. The Deck's SSD is removable with a single screw, and the fan pops out with a few more screws.
Valve keeps supporting the software
Valve no longer sells the original Steam Deck LCD, but it still supports the device with software updates. That handheld runs the same software as the Steam Deck OLED, which the company still sells.
Developers still optimize for it

The Steam Deck's processor, GPU and sixteen GB of RAM likely put a lower ceiling on its longevity than Valve's support.
Lifespan depends on your gaming tastes
For indies, older games and emulation, the Deck has years more to offer. For new AAA releases, that window is already closing fast.
