Is the original Nintendo Switch still worth buying in 2026?
Nine years on, the original Switch makes sense only if you're buying used at the right price.
In brief
Nine years on, the original Switch makes sense only if you're buying used at the right price. A used original Switch at $200 offers nine years of games for a fraction of Switch 2's $500 price, but new models are hard to justify. Originally reported by Engadget.
Switch 2 launches at $500
Nintendo's new console arrived September 1 at $499.99, while the original Switch costs $339.99 and the OLED model is $399.99. Buying new makes Switch 2 easier to justify.
Switch 2 has exclusive games and upgrades
Splatoon Raiders is exclusive to Switch 2, with Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave coming September 17 and Metroid Ravenous in January 2027. Switch 2 also runs original Switch games better through Handheld Mode Boost.
OLED shines for handheld play

The Switch OLED's 7-inch OLED panel offers better contrast and black levels than Switch 2's LCD, with battery life of 4.5 to 9 hours versus 2 to 6.5 hours. But docked, you're paying $399.99 for the same performance as the $339.99 standard model.
Used models change the math
Pre-owned standard Switch consoles sell for around $200 and used OLED models for around $250 at GameStop. Now you're comparing a $200 console to a $500 console, making used hardware far more compelling.
Nine years of games still available
The original Switch has nine years of Nintendo games, third-party releases and indies. Nintendo says the eShop, Switch Online and other services will continue for the foreseeable future.
Check serial numbers before buying

Look for serial numbers starting with XKW rather than XAW when buying a used standard Switch. The newer hardware lasts 4.5 to 9 hours per charge versus 2.5 to 6.5 hours for the original revision.
Test hardware before purchase
Inspect the Joy-Con sticks, USB-C port, screen, dock and charger before buying used. The original Switch rates 4 out of 10 for repairability due to a glued-in battery and soldered USB-C port.
What it means
A used original Switch at $200 offers nine years of games for a fraction of Switch 2's $500 price, but new models are hard to justify.
