Joby Aviation flies across America with no pilot

The electric aircraft startup completed a 3,200-mile autonomous journey from California to North Carolina.

In brief

The electric aircraft startup completed a 3,200-mile autonomous journey from California to North Carolina. Joby's autonomous flight system can work on existing aircraft for cargo and emergency response, not just city air taxis. Originally reported by Engadget.

Joby flies 3,200 miles with no pilot

Joby Aviation completed what it calls the first autonomous flight across the United States, traveling 3,199 miles from Buchanan Field in California to Dare County Regional Airport in North Carolina's Outer Banks.

“first-ever autonomous flight across the United States”

The aircraft handled everything alone

Joby's autonomy system controlled the converted Cessna Caravan for taxiing, takeoff, cruising and landing without any input from an onboard safety pilot. Remote supervisors monitored from Joby's California headquarters and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.

Return trip includes multiple stops

After completing the eastbound journey, Joby's autonomous aircraft will fly back westward with pit stops planned in Raleigh, Salt Lake City and Portland.

Beyond air taxis for city commutes

Joby is known for piloted electric air taxis it began demoing in New York City in April. The autonomous system could expand the company's reach into commercial freight, emergency response and defense logistics.

Autonomous tech works on existing planes

Joby says its autonomy system can be integrated into existing aircraft designs, not just purpose-built air taxis. This flexibility could make the technology valuable for multiple industries.
