Meta rolls out AI training opt-out

Meta has started rolling out a setting that allows smart glasses users to opt out of letting the company use visual data collected by the device for AI training. The setting is now available within the Meta AI app.

How to find the setting

Navigate to the settings for your glasses, select Meta AI, and scroll down to store visual data from AI experiences. Your glasses must be out of their case and connected to your phone to change the setting.

Multiple pairs need individual changes

Multiple pairs need individual changes

If you have multiple pairs of glasses, you will need to repeat the opt-out step for each pair separately to disable visual data collection across all your devices.

Some features may be disabled

Opting out may prevent you from using certain features with the glasses, including visual reminders like looking at an object and asking Meta AI to remind you to buy it next week.

Meta explains human review possible

Meta published a help center article stating that visual data may be used to train and improve AI models through automated or manual, human review. This applies to data from AI experiences like Live AI.

“This includes the process of training and improving AI models, which may be automated or manual (human).”

What visual data actually means

Meta clarifies that visual data does not include photos and videos you capture with your glasses when the capture LED is on. It only covers data from specific AI features like Live AI.

The takeaway

Meta has begun rolling out an opt-out setting for smart glasses users who do not want their visual data used for AI training, available in the Meta AI app.
