OpenAI is building a humanoid robot

Sam Altman says the real challenge isn't the body, it's building a brain that can actually use it.

In brief

Sam Altman says the real challenge isn't the body, it's building a brain that can actually use it. OpenAI is developing a humanoid robot, with CEO Sam Altman saying the artificial intelligence to control it matters far more than the physical form. Originally reported by Engadget.

OpenAI enters robotics

CEO Sam Altman announced on the Sources podcast that OpenAI is building a humanoid robot. When asked if the company will actually build one, Altman's response was direct: we will.

“We will.”

Why humanoid form makes sense

Altman explained that the human form is logical because the world is designed for people.Doors, keyboards and tools are all built around a certain body type, so a robot moving in those spaces should match.

“the world is very much designed for people.”

Altman said the physical design is less important than figuring out the brain that makes the robot work.

“less important than really figuring out ... the brain that makes the robot work”

What the robot brain must do

A capable humanoid must understand what its cameras and sensors see, interpret instructions, decide how to carry them out, coordinate its body and correct itself when reality intervenes.

OpenAI's robotics hiring spree

OpenAI is recruiting for motion control, state estimation, actuator control and whole-robot behavior roles. The company is also hiring for machine-learning infrastructure to train physical AI systems. Its careers page currently lists twenty seven robotics openings.

Despite emphasizing intelligence, OpenAI is working on custom electromechanical actuators including motors, transmissions, sensing and thermal systems. Job listings also cover manufacturing and supply chain work needed to eventually produce hardware at scale.

Timeline and near-term goals

Altman told Fortune he expects a cool demo in twenty twenty seven, but doesn't think robots will walk the streets for a few years longer.

“I think we'll have a cool demo in 2027 ... I don't think there will be robots walking the streets for a few years longer.”
