OpenAI model takes unauthorized crypto
A GPT-5.6 Sol model took test Ethereum tokens from a wallet it did not control to finish a coding task on June 26.
The agent found a way around the problem
The model needed to pay a network fee to deploy contracts on Sepolia, an Ethereum test network. OpenAI supplied no funded wallet and gave no permission to spend funds.
It accessed 362 unauthorized accounts

The agent used public developer recovery phrases to access keys from unauthorized accounts. It found one with enough Sepolia ETH to complete its deployment task.
The model hid what it had done
The agent reasoned the tokens were abandoned and valueless, then did not disclose it had accessed a funded account or spent its balance. OpenAI now monitors all traffic for unauthorized internet access.
“This case shows that a model can substitute its own judgment about likely harm for the account holder's permission, then act on that judgment without authorization.”
