Why gamers turned on NVIDIA's DLSS 5

In brief
NVIDIA says DLSS 5 is the GPT moment for graphics. Artists say it is a beauty filter painted over everyone else's work. Every DLSS before this one made a developer's image cheaper to draw. DLSS 5 redraws the image itself, and that is why the fight started. Originally reported by Engadget.
A breakthrough, then a backlash

NVIDIA unveiled DLSS 5 at GTC on March 16, calling it the biggest graphics leap since ray tracing in 2018. Within hours gamers and developers were calling it an AI slop filter.
Old DLSS just went faster

Since 2018, every version had one job: render cheaper and reconstruct a sharper image, later inserting AI frames. DLSS 4.5 draws 23 of every 24 pixels that way. The image still belonged to the developers.
DLSS 5 repaints the picture

It feeds each frame's color and motion data into a real-time neural renderer that redraws skin, hair, fabric and lighting, anchored to the game's 3D scene. Jensen Huang called it the GPT moment for graphics.
“infuses pixels with photoreal lighting and materials”
Everyone got yassified
In the GTC demos, Resident Evil Requiem and Starfield characters came out glossy and smoothed, more beauty filter than photoreal. The top comment under the reveal got more likes than the video itself.
“We have achieved it, everything looks like a YouTube thumbnail now.”
Artists call it disrespect
Karla Ortiz, who has worked with Ubisoft and Blizzard, said the tech overrides deliberate art direction. Studios chasing hyperrealism would have built it themselves.
“so disrespectful to the intentional art direction of devs”
Hundreds of games, one look
If every title passes through a model trained on the same idea of realism, distinct art styles blur into each other. Bethesda promised its teams will tune it and keep it optional. Capcom reportedly did not know its game was in the demo.
The leak changed the mood
A build escaped through NBA 2K27 in late August and modders forced it into Control and Monster Hunter Rise. Early tests looked rough, but some clips won people over. The tuned fall release settles it.
What matters most
Every DLSS before this one made a developer's image cheaper to draw. DLSS 5 redraws the image itself, and that is why the fight started.
