Why your iPhone hides the decline button

In brief
Your iPhone's call screen changes based on whether it's locked or unlocked, and there are hidden ways to reject calls. iPhones show a decline button only when unlocked; when locked, you must slide to answer. You can reject calls by pressing the side button twice or silence them with volume buttons. Originally reported…
Locked vs unlocked screens
When your iPhone is locked, incoming calls show only a slide to answer control. When unlocked, you get answer and decline buttons. This is default iPhone behaviour, not a setting you changed.
Reject calls without the button
Press the side button twice quickly to decline and send the caller to voicemail. Press either volume button to silence the ring without declining. Both work whether the screen is locked or not.
Send a text instead of answering

Tap the incoming call banner to reveal options, then select Message. Choose a prepared reply or select Custom to write your own text explaining why you cannot answer.
Customize your quick replies
Go to Settings, Apps, Phone, Respond with Text to edit prepared replies in advance. Change them to messages like I'm working right now or Please text me; I'm busy.
Block spam and robocalls
Find the rejected number in Recents, tap the Info button, scroll to the bottom, select Block Caller and confirm.
Screen unknown callers

Go to Settings, Apps, Phone, Screen Unknown Callers on iOS twenty-six and later. Choose Never, Ask Reason for Calling, or Silence. Silence sends all unknown calls straight to voicemail without ringing.
The one thing
iPhones show a decline button only when unlocked; when locked, you must slide to answer. You can reject calls by pressing the side button twice or silence them with volume buttons.
