Xbox can run PS5 games now, but barely

A developer got PlayStation 5 games working on Xbox Series X through an emulator, but memory limits make it impractical for real use.

In brief

A developer got PlayStation 5 games working on Xbox Series X through an emulator, but memory limits make it impractical for real use. Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal created PS5X, an emulator that runs PS5 games on Xbox Series X in Developer Mode, but a five gigabyte memory cap prevents it from running most current…

Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal posted a YouTube video on September eight showing Quake II running on an Xbox Series X through PS5X, an emulator based on the open-source KytyPS5.

Four games work so far

PS5X runs the PS5 versions of GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, Marvel Cosmic Invasion and Quake II, all compatible with Xbox controller inputs. Some have working sound.

How the emulator works

Both Xbox Series X and PS5 use AMD Zen two CPU cores and RDNA two graphics. PS5 games compile for x86-64 architecture, so KytyPS5 acts as a translator rather than recreating PS5 hardware.

DirectX translation adds friction

DirectX translation adds friction

KytyPS5 translates PS5 graphics to Vulkan, but Xbox Developer Mode only supports DirectX eleven and DirectX twelve. Uenal wrote that everything must be translated to DirectX, and AI was involved.

Memory cap kills most games

Microsoft limits Developer Mode games to five gigabytes of memory. Retail Xbox games get thirteen point five gigabytes. PS5X works with about thirty-seven percent of the memory a normal Xbox game can use.

No workaround without jailbreak

The five gigabyte cap rules out the majority of current-gen games. There is no real workaround without a jailbreak, meaning Xbox players cannot benefit from PC emulation progress.

Legal risks loom large

Uenal describes PS5X as a research project for homebrew and game backups. The Switch emulator Yuzu was killed by a Nintendo lawsuit in twenty twenty-four, with makers paying two point four million dollars.

Scammers exploit the hype

Scammers are releasing malware under similar names like PCS5X to trick players into downloading it. Users should exercise caution when seeking out PS5X and similar emulation projects.

What matters most

Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal created PS5X, an emulator that runs PS5 games on Xbox Series X in Developer Mode, but a five gigabyte memory cap prevents it from running most current games.
