Oosthuizen's decision
Louis Oosthuizen, a former Open champion, chose to leave LIV Golf before the October 25 player commitment deadline.
“The biggest thing for me was playing the majors. I still have a lot of drive to play in major golf.”
Reason for leaving
Oosthuizen wants to control his schedule and avoid excessive travel for single tournaments.
“I need to arrange my own schedule and look after my body. I want to play near one spot for three weeks at a time, not have all the big travelling for one tournament.”
LIV's calendar changes
LIV planned 14 events for 2026 but canceled two, reducing the calendar to 12 tournaments.
“LIV planned 14 events for 2026 but finished with 12 after postponing New Orleans and canceling the Michigan finale.”
LIV 2.0 proposal
LIV's proposed reboot includes smaller purses and a 52.5 percent player ownership stake.
“BC Partners Credit has offered up to $300 million in financing, subject to conditions, under a plan that would give players a 52.5 percent ownership stake.”
Oosthuizen's commitment
Oosthuizen will return to the DP World Tour for the 2025 Open Championship at St Andrews.
“The Open is at a course I love and where I have won. My goal is to get my game as sharp as possible to have myself ready and then see how it goes.”
Player exodus
Oosthuizen is part of a growing trend of golfers leaving LIV Golf ahead of the October 25 deadline.
“Realistically, Louis Oosthuizen is far from alone in facing that challenge. Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia, Adrian Meronk, David Puig, Charles Howell III, Thomas Pieters, and Abraham Ancer have all left LIV.”
