Gas leak forces mass evacuation
Atmos Energy crews discovered an outdoor gas leak at Alexan Riveredge Apartments on Friday evening during routine inspections. The 325-unit building was about 90% occupied when precautionary measures forced evacuation and power shutoff.
Kitchen fire preceded the leak
Earlier that Friday afternoon, a kitchen fire on the fourth floor was quickly extinguished by the building's sprinkler system and firefighters with no injuries. The gas leak was discovered during inspections that followed.
Technicians cap the gas mains

Atmos Energy technicians successfully capped both the primary 16-inch gas main and a parallel 3-inch main on Saturday evening, stopping the active leak. Air quality monitoring then began before power could be restored.
Residents face extended displacement
Residents spent a second full day away from home on Sunday with no official timeline announced for re-entry. Atmos estimated gas service could remain interrupted until Tuesday for the building and six nearby businesses.
Emergency services mobilize support
Dallas Area Rapid Transit buses provided temporary shelter while the Office of Emergency Management and Crisis Response coordinated aid. The American Red Cross provided overnight lodging for residents who needed it.
In short
The leak was capped within 24 hours, but residents faced extended displacement while air quality monitoring and utility repairs continued.
