Big Tex gets Texas-themed boots
The 55-foot cowboy is wearing new boots featuring bluebonnets, a longhorn, and red and blue accents honoring the Texas flag. His new Levi's 501 jeans weigh 132 pounds and required 85 yards of denim.
Cavender's shirt updates yearly
Big Tex's new red Cavender's pearl snap shirt features navy blue and white accents. The Western-style top will be updated each year with logos and designs reflecting fair, Texas, or American milestones.
New horse show and performers
The fair adds a Texas in the Saddle horse show for families to watch livestock performances. New performer Wacky Chad and two new mascots join Little Big Tex to entertain guests throughout the 24-day event.
Chocolate corny dog wins top award
Fletcher's Chocolate Corny Dog wins Best Tasting Sweet in the Big Tex Choice Awards. Other winners include Burger Chop Tator Tacos for savory and Berry in Matcha cheesecake on a stick for most creative.
Dozens of wild new foods debut
The fair features deep-fried novelties, global flavor fusions, and creative sweets including Twinkle Twinkle Brisket Star and Soft Serve Smoked Peach Bourbon Smash. Fried broccoli from a new concessionaire offers a lighter option.
Adult tickets drop two dollars
Adult ticket prices are $2 cheaper this year after last year's attendance decline. Kids 12 and under get in for $10 daily, and admission is $10 after 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Parking and rides get cheaper
Parking fees have been lowered this year. Ride prices have dropped nearly 20 percent year-over-year, responding to visitor complaints about the overall cost of attendance at the fair.
Firearm ban stays in effect
The State Fair continues its firearm ban this year, with current and retired law enforcement exempt. Visitors pass through enhanced security screening with weapons detection systems at entry.
Clear bags recommended but optional
Clear bags are not required to enter the State Fair but officials strongly recommend them to speed up security screening. Clear bags are required for Cotton Bowl events like the State Fair Classic.
HBCU rivalry game Saturday
Prairie View A&M and Grambling State renew their historic rivalry Saturday at the Cotton Bowl with kickoff at 6 p.m. The State Fair Classic typically draws over 60,000 fans and is one of the biggest HBCU football events.
