Week 2 running back starts lean on volume

Three fantasy backs still belong in lineups despite Week 1 worries, role questions, and messy box scores.

In brief

Three fantasy backs still belong in lineups despite Week 1 worries, role questions, and messy box scores. Do not bench a running back just because Week 1 looked uneven. Follow snaps, touches, targets, and matchup context. Originally reported by Fantasy Sports On SI.

Week 2 is tricky

The first lineup call after opening week is hard because managers need to react without chasing every Week 1 blip. Running back is the spot where that balance matters most.

Stevenson still starts

Rhamondre Stevenson remains a Week 2 start even if TreVeyon Henderson returns. If Henderson sits, the call becomes much easier.

His carries look safe

Stevenson had 18 carries in Week 1, while Corey Kiner had six. The read here is that Henderson likely steps into Kiner's role, not Stevenson's lead workload.

“That's more than enough volume to start Stevenson”

Targets may shift

The passing work is the one concern. Stevenson saw six targets, and a fully healthy Henderson could take part of that role, though he may not be full speed right away.

Etienne panic is early

Travis Etienne Jr. worried managers after a quiet first half and an even carry split with Kendre Miller. The underlying usage still points back to Etienne for Week 2.

Etienne was better

Etienne averaged 5.1 yards per carry, while Miller averaged 3.3. Etienne also caught seven of nine targets, while Miller had no passing-game role.

Snaps tell the story

Etienne played 53 snaps to Miller's 26, a 59 percent to 29 percent split. That gap is the clearest reason to keep him active against Baltimore.

Judkins gets another shot

Quinshon Judkins had a rough opener, with 33 rushing yards on 12 carries against Jacksonville. The Browns get a better Week 2 matchup with Tampa Bay.

Volume keeps him alive

With Dylan Sampson injured, Judkins also caught two passes for 17 yards. The expected touches and added receiving work make him too useful to bench yet.

“It is too soon for us to put him on our bench.”

The headline

Do not bench a running back just because Week 1 looked uneven. Follow snaps, touches, targets, and matchup context.
