In brief
Houston loses its star shortstop down the stretch in a tight AL West race against Texas. The Astros must win the AL West without Carlos Correa to secure a playoff spot, with the division likely decided between Houston and Texas in the final two weeks. Originally reported by Fastball On SI.
Correa done for the season
The 31-year-old shortstop will not return to play this year after suffering a left ankle tendon injury in May. Manager Joe Espada announced the decision Tuesday, ending hopes of a late-season comeback.
“I give him a ton of credit. He worked his tail off trying to get back this season.”
Surgery and rehab didn't work out
Correa had season-ending ankle surgery earlier this year but recently attempted to rehab and return. The team ultimately decided to shut him down to protect his health for next season.
“make sure he's healthy for next season”
Astros lead AL West by one game

Houston sits at 75-75, just one game ahead of the Texas Rangers at 74-76. The Seattle Mariners are five games back in third place.
Division race likely Houston versus Texas
With Seattle five games back, the AL West will probably come down to a two-team battle between the Astros and Rangers over the final two weeks of the season.
Both teams face playoff contenders
Houston plays Kansas City, Atlanta, Seattle, and Oakland. Texas faces Boston, Toronto, New York Mets, and Minnesota. Both will test themselves against teams in the playoff picture.
Loser faces wild card fight
Whichever team finishes second in the AL West will battle for the third and final wild card spot. The division winner gets a direct path to the playoffs.
Altuve and Alvarez must step up
Without Correa, the Astros will lean on Jose Altuve and MVP candidate Yordan Alvarez to provide offense down the stretch and keep Houston in contention for October baseball.
