Emory Researchers Identify ALS Blood Test
Emory University researchers found a 10-protein blood signature that distinguishes ALS patients from healthy controls with 98.3% accuracy.
“We saw the proteins we expected, like neurofilament and phosphorylated tau, but we also found differences in proteins that hadn't been linked to ALS in blood before.”
Alamar Technology Used for Testing
Alamar Biosciences' NULISA technology measured over 300 neurological and inflammatory proteins in each blood sample.
Study Published in Nature Communications
The study, published in Nature Communications, outperformed a leading individual ALS biomarker including patients with difficult-to-diagnose presentations.
10-Protein Signature Details
The signature combines established neurofilament markers NFL and NEFH with pTau-181 and VEGFA, plus six new proteins not previously reported as ALS blood biomarkers.
Validation Results
In a validation cohort of 144 ALS patients and 37 controls, the 10-protein signature achieved 98.3% balanced accuracy compared with 89.9% for neurofilament light chain alone.
Why This Matters
The signature identifies ALS patients missed by NFL alone, including those with little disability, which helps distinguish ALS from other conditions.
The big picture
Emory University researchers developed a 10-protein blood test that correctly identifies ALS patients with 98.3% accuracy using Alamar Biosciences' NULISA technology.
