China's 40% export share shows Trump's tariffs backfired
Record Chinese container exports suggest the Trump administration's trade war has pushed China to diversify markets rather than slow its growth.

China hits record export share
China now accounts for forty percent of the world's container exports on a rolling three-month basis, up two point five percent from nine months ago and its highest-ever level.
“China now accounts for 40% of the world's container exports on a rolling three-month basis, a 2.5% increase from nine months ago and its highest-ever levels”
Europe faces growing trade imbalance
Jens Eskelund, president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, warned that cheaper Chinese goods flooding European markets squeeze out local manufacturers and cost the continent global export share.
America faces China Shock 2.0

The U.S. faces a similar fate to the China Shock of the early two thousands, when Chinese products flooded American shelves after its WTO entry. Economists predict China Shock two point zero will extend to technology, AI infrastructure and electric vehicles.
China becomes workshop of the world
Jeremi Suri, a public affairs and history professor at the University of Texas at Austin, told Fortune that China is becoming the workshop of the world, meaning almost every global economy depends on it.
“China really is becoming the workshop of the world. And what that means is that almost every global economy is one way or another dependent on China.”
Tariffs made the problem worse
Jeremi Suri said Trump's tariff policies of the last two years have been an unmitigated disaster that made China's export dominance worse for the United States, not better.
“The tariff policies of the last two years have been an unmitigated disaster. They have made exactly what we're talking about worse for the United States.”
Tariffs pushed China to dodge and diversify
Import taxes shut China out of parts of the U.S. market, forcing Chinese exporters to find markets elsewhere and engage in transshipments, exporting intermediate parts to countries with lower tariff rates to avoid import taxes.
White House reports massive tariff revenue loss
Last month, the White House released a report claiming the U.S. lost between nineteen billion to twenty six billion dollars in tax revenue from transshipments, with China being the primary culprit.
Tariffs damaged U.S. credibility as trade partner
Suri expects China to continue branching out to other countries for trade because U.S. trade policy has ruined America's credibility as a reliable trade partner, pushing countries further away more quickly.
“We use trade for power, but we can't presume that those levers will be as meaningful going forward. With tariffs, we're pushing countries further away more quickly.”
The headline
China now controls forty percent of global container exports, its highest ever, suggesting Trump's tariffs have failed to slow Chinese trade dominance and instead pushed the country to find new markets.
